What Is This Study About?
This study found that women who develop Bell’s palsy during late pregnancy or shortly after delivery experience worse long-term facial nerve recovery compared to non-pregnant patients. The findings have important implications for management of pregnant patients with facial paralysis.
Key Findings
- Bell’s palsy in late pregnancy or early postpartum has worse long-term outcomes
- These patients showed higher rates of synkinesis and incomplete recovery
- Pregnancy-related facial palsy may require more aggressive monitoring and early intervention
What This Means for Patients
Pregnant women who develop facial paralysis should be closely monitored and may benefit from early referral to a facial nerve specialist.
